Getting to Know You
After you step off your train at the Aix-en-Provence TGV station you will be chauffeured to your charming hotel in the heart of the city that will act as your “home base” throughout your travels with Band of Light. (Our travel specialists will arrange private transportation from the airport to the train station.)
After you take a deep breath, relax and rejuvenate, you’ll gather with your intimate group of 8 or fewer and your instructors at 6:30 p.m. for cocktails and refreshments. You’ll be escorted to dinner where you’ll enjoy your choice of mouth-watering local cuisine and a full overview of all of the exciting adventures you’ll experience this week.

Soon your creative side will be allowed to reign free as we discuss how to find or refresh your unique voice. With its turn as Vatican City, the papal seat of power, for 67 years, this spectacular walled city is home to a massive medieval fortress: The Palais des Papes. Today, Avignon’s stunning architecture and gorgeous views of the Rhone River, draw tourists from around the world. Our local guide will lead you through the famed landmarks and beyond.
Improving Your Technique and Developing Your Unique Point of View
Now that you’re following your artistic intuition and naturally reacting to inspiration, it’s time to refine your technique.
It’s time for you to learn how to ensure that your photographs are accurate reflections of your vision. Before the end of the day you’ll understand how to create strong compositions, think critically about point of view, create visual depth, and understand why simplicity is better than intricacy, with a final lesson on how to capture the right light.
After you journey through Avignon, you’ll return to Aix for dinner, followed by a critique of your photos from Marseille. Here you’ll receive your first Photoshop lesson on image analysis and developing a repeatable, dynamic editing workflow that will allow you to create the images you see in your vision.
Fine-Tune Your Technique in Cassis

Discover How to Refine Your Creative Process
Why Photographers Pursue the Mystery of Cassis: Impressive cliffs, delightful vineyards and fascinating ruins of a medieval castle all encircle this picturesque little port town. In Cassis you’ll also find famous beaches and a charming wharf where you can enjoy some of the best seafood in the region. Cassis is a lovely destination that offers a multitude of varying subjects to photograph.
Now is the time to begin mastering the critical lessons you’ve so far learned, and loosen your vision so that you can fine-tune your creative process. Over the next two days you’ll learn how to expand your production possibilities and leverage the best in-camera techniques to create the image you’re hoping to express.
After a long day shooting in Cassis, you’ll dine in luxury in Marseille, and return to Aix for your advanced Photoshop lesson where you’ll further your image analysis and dynamic workflow capabilities.
Perfect Your Skill in Oppede-le-Vieux (or a Free Day to Explore Aix)

Oppede-le-Vieux: Steep yourself in the history and magic of France, as you embark on a journey into Oppede-le-Vieux, one of the most authentic medieval villages left in Europe. You’ll enjoy the peace and solitude of this quaint village by the sea as you perfect your skill and capture the rocky cliffs of the Luberon and an old fortified castle perched above.
Practice, Practice, Practice
Before the end of the day, you’ll have a complete understanding of every concept and skill you’ve learned during your amazing travels through France. Rest assured that you will finish your final day completely comfortable with your camera and creative vision because you’ll have ample time to eliminate any uncertainties and get answers to your questions.
You’ll spend the afternoon capturing the medieval essence of this gem by the sea, and enjoy one last mouth-watering dinner while you receive a critique of your most recent works.
Free Day – If you so desire, you’re welcome to forgo formal instruction and take a free day to implement your newly acquired skills. Explore local markets, boutiques, artisan galleries, and museums, or simply relax and rejuvenate at a sidewalk café. No matter what, remember to bring your camera, because you’ll have ample opportunity to implement what you’ve learned before your final critique this evening.

You will depart your hotel in the morning with enough time to arrive at the TGV train station by 11:30 a.m. You’re welcome to catch the train to Paris or Marseille where you board a flight back home, or put your newly acquired skills to practice as you tour Europe unaccompanied.
